KWXY

AN INDEPENDENT RADIO STATION BROADCASTING FROM PALM SPRINGS TO THE WORLD SINCE 1964 ●

Music has always played an important role in the history of Palm Springs, and KWXY has been part of that history for more than 50 years. From its first air date in 1964, to present, KWXY Music Radio has been known as “The Sound of the Desert”.

KWXY broadcasts from the historic studios on Dinah Shore Drive, built by veteran broadcaster Glen Barnett (1924-2014) who not only built and wired the studios and transmitter, but created one of the longest running formats in radio history.

Decades before the internet and satellite radio, the full-time residents of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley as well as seasonal visitors from all over the United States, Canada, and Europe made KWXY one of the world’s most listened to radio stations.

Some of the most iconic entertainers of all time have visited the KWXY studios, including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Trini Lopez, Jerry Vale, Lena Horne, Louis Armstrong, Wolfman Jack, Sonny & Cher, and many, many others.

Music has changed since 1964, and “The Sound of the Desert” is no longer defined by a single music style, genre, or era in time. The Coachella Valley is now home to multigene music festivals that draw 100,000 visitors a day, with several concert venues, Desert Rock, and a thriving local music scene.

Palm Springs, and the Coachella Valley, are like no other place in America. So, its radio shouldn’t sound like radio you can hear anywhere else. KWXY features a cast of radio personalities, playing a unique blend of music that represents the different generations, lifestyles, and cultures living in today’s desert that have all contributed to “The Sound of the Desert.”
