KWXY Presents ● The Music of Big Sean

Big Sean – Detroit 2 Album Cover - released through GOOD Music on September 4, 2020, with distribution by Def Jam Recordings

Big Sean is a rapper, record producer, singer/songwriter and entrepreneur active since 2005 with his first mixtape released in 2007.  His third mixtape in 2010, Finally Famous Vol. 3:  Big propelled him to stardom.  It boasts twenty tracks and an all-star lineup of rap artists, including Bun B of the southern rap duo UGK, rapper/producer Curren$y and rapper Chiddy Bang.  Today, he boasts three consecutive platinum albums on Kanye West’s label, GOOD Music and on his own label, FF to Def.

Big Sean was born Sean Michael Leonard Anderson in Santa Monica, California on March 25, 1988.  His mother Myra moved her family to Detroit, Michigan where he was raised by his mother and maternal grandmother.  He spent his school years entirely in Detroit, first attending the private Detroit Waldorf School and graduating from Lewis Cass Technical High School where he maintained a 3.7 GPA.

During his high school years, he frequently participated in a weekly rap battle held by a local hip-hop radio station.  In 2005, he learned of an upcoming radio interview with rapper Kayne West at another station and went there in the hope of meeting West and to demonstrate his freestyle rapping skills.  Impressed, West signed Sean to his GOOD Music label in 2007.

Big Sean released two mixtapes in 2010, Finally Famous:  The Mixtape and Finally Famous Vol. 3:  Big.  His debut album, Finally Famous was scheduled to be released in September 2010, but the date was soon pushed back to June 28, 2011, due to an unauthorized online leak of one of the tracks.  Five more albums followed on GOOD Music and Def Jam Records between 2011 and 2019, most of which featured collaborations with other notable rap artists.

His first album of the 2020s, Detroit II, featuring the late West Coast rapper Nipsey Hussle, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and soon became his third platinum album.  Sean announced his departure from GOOD Music in October 2021 and the creation of his own label, FF to Def.  Its first release was a collaborative EP titled What You Expect, featuring rapper/singer/songwriter Hit-Boy.

Big Sean currently resides in Beverly Hills, California in an 11,000-square-foot home once owned by guitarist Slash of Guns N’ Roses, and is scheduled to be here in the Coachella Valley, on Friday April 15th and Friday April 22nd at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
