KWXY Presents ● The Music of Beabadoobee
BEABADOOBEE (stylized as “beabadoobee”) is a Filipino-English indie rock singer/songwriter and self-taught guitarist active since 2017. Her professional name was the one originally used on her private Instagram account and later on Bandcamp when asked by a friend how she wished to be credited for her songs. She released five EPs on the independent British label Dirty Hit Records in 2018-19 and her critically acclaimed debut studio album, Fake It Flowers in 2020, also on Dirty Hit.
She was born Beatrice Ilejay Laus on June 3, 2000 in Iloilo City, Philippines, relocating to London, UK with her family at age three. She was self-credited as “Beatrice Kristi Laus” on an actor release form for her 2017 work on the independent film project, Alena. In September of that year, Laus released the first song she’d written for and recorded on guitar. “Coffee” garnered more than 300,000 YouTube views in a short time. Described by Complex.com as a “hushed, intimate track with a wandering tempo,” “Coffee” brought her to the attention of the record industry. Laus attributes the unsteady tempo to her inability to play to a click track.
After signing to Dirty Hit Records in 2018, Laus released her first two EPs: Lice and Patched Up. She then toured as an opening act and special guest with English pop rock band The 1975 on their 2018 Music for Cars Tour. A third EP, Loveworm, followed in 2019 and she supported singer/songwriter Clairo that year on her Immunity tour.
In 2020, beabadoobee released her critically acclaimed debut album, Fake It Flowers. The twelve-track alt-rock/indie rock album yielded the five singles “Care,” “Sorry,” “Worth It,” “How Was Your Day?” and “Together.” “Care” received accolades such as “one of the best songs of 2020” by Pitchfork and Top 20 listings by The New York Times, British website NME and European pop culture magazine, Crack.
