KWXY Presents ● The Music of Anitta
Anitta is a Brazilian singer/songwriter, actress, dancer and social media personality active since 2010. She rose to fame in 2013 with her first single, “Show das Poderosas.” Since then, the song’s music video has earned more than 150 million YouTube views and a contract with Warner Music Brazil in 2014.
She was born Larissa de Macedo Machado on March 30, 1993 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and was raised by her mother, Miriam Macedo. Through her maternal grandparents, she started singing in a local church choir at age eight. She began English lessons at age eleven, becoming fluent, and a course at a technical school at sixteen. She embarked on a musical career at seventeen and won the Associação Paulista de Críticos de Arte “Revelation of Music” award that same year.
In 2010, Anitta signed with the independent label, Furacão 2000. At the time, her stage name was simply “Anita,” a name inspired by a character on a 2001 TV miniseries, Presença de Anita. The change was suggested by her manager. She appeared on television for the first time in 2012 and was signed to K2L Entertainment that same year. The music video for “Show das Poderosas” was released in May 2013, soon becoming the most played music video on YouTube in Brazil and the third most played song on radio across the nation.
Between 2014 and 2016, Anitta released two more studio albums, Meu Lugar and Ritmo Perfeito in 2014 and Bang in 2015. The video for the title track went on to receive more than 320 million views while its first single, “Deixa Ele Sofrer,” made Anitta the first Brazilian singer to hit number one on Spotify Brazil. International success followed in 2017 with two more albums, Checkmate and Solo, several collaborations and successful concert appearances. More collaborations followed in 2019 as did the album Kisses, her fourth studio album. Recorded in English, Spanish and Portuguese with a music video accompanying each track, the album went to number four in the US.
Anitta announced a new publishing agreement with Sony Music Publishing in January 2022. In addition to her “Revelation in Music” award, she is a five-time winner of the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Brazilian Act, the first Brazilian artist to win the MTV Europe Best Latin American Act award and was ranked by Billboard as one of social media’s most influential celebrities in 2017.
