KWXY Presents ● The Music of 100 gecs’

Cover self-released debut album, 1000 Gecs

100 gecs (stylized in lowercase) is the electronic pop duo of singer/songwriter/musician/record producers Dylan Brady and Laura Les, aka “osno1.”  Their 2019 debut album, 1000 Gecs, was released on Brady’s label, Dog Show Records to critical acclaim as was their second remix album in 2020, 1000 gecs and the Tree of Clues.  There is some dispute over the origin of the name, with both giving different and varied explanations.  One story given by Les claims the name came about when ordering a single gecko from an online retailer but received one hundred live geckos instead.

Dylan Marshall Brady was born November 27, 1993 in St. Louis, Missouri, developing an interest in music composition while taking piano lessons.  While studying audio engineering in college, Brady released a number of electronic hip-hop singles to SoundCloud.  Laura Les was born December 2, 1994 in Chicago, Illinois and grew up in Webster Groves, Illinois. A transgender who prefers the use of female pronouns, Les also studied engineering in college while working in what she describes as a “cross between a coffee shop and an empanada restaurant.”

The duo first met at a local rodeo while in high school and, after meeting again in 2012, decided to collaborate.  Brady had already established himself as a solo artist and leader of the experimental band Cake Pop with self-released singles and EPs.  These were first released on SoundCloud and later via the Mad Decent label.  Les had some SoundCloud releases under the name osno1.

Their collaboration began in earnest as DJs at the 2019 Minecraft Fire Festival, performing an online joint set.  Mixes from that event and later collaborations throughout the year became their debut album.  2020 saw the release of 1000 gecs and the Tree of Clues, a remix of songs from the first album along with unreleased tracks from the Minecraft event.  As was the case with 1000 Gecs, the nineteen-track remix album was met by critical and commercial acclaim, peaking at number three on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart.  100 gecs’ “10000 Gecs” world tour resumes March 25 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
