IVOX RADIO Presents ● The Music of WAR
The rock funk and soul of WAR began in Long Beach, California, in 1969. Known for their genre-blending sound that incorporates elements of funk, jazz, rock, reggae, and Latin music, WAR is celebrated for their socially conscious lyrics and infectious grooves. The band was initially created by producer Jerry Goldstein and singer Eric Burdon of The Animals, with the original lineup featuring Howard Scott (guitar), Lonnie Jordan (keyboard), Lee Oskar (harmonica), B.B. Dickerson (bass), Harold Brown (drums), Papa Dee Allen (percussion), and Charles Miller (saxophone).
WAR’s breakthrough came with their 1970 album Eric Burdon Declares “War”, featuring the hit single “Spill the Wine,” which showcased their innovative style. After Burdon’s departure, WAR continued as an independent group and achieved even greater success. Albums like The World Is a Ghetto (1972) and Why Can’t We Be Friends? (1975) cemented their place in music history. Iconic songs such as “Low Rider,” “The Cisco Kid,” and “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” remain timeless classics.

With millions of records sold and numerous accolades, including a Grammy nomination, WAR’s influence spans decades. Their songs have been featured in films, television, and commercials, ensuring their legacy across generations.
