Duane Eddy passed away on April 30, 2024. He was a rock and roll guitarist that influenced a generation to play guitar. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, he had a string of hit records produced by Lee Hazlewood which were noted for their characteristically "twangy" guitar sound, including "Rebel-'Rouser", "Peter Gunn", and "Because They're Young".
He was born on April 26, 1938, in Corning, New York, and was one of the most influential figures in the history of rock and roll. Renowned for his distinctive “twangy” guitar sound, his guitar style laid the foundation for countless genres, including surf rock, country, and instrumental rock.
Eddy began playing guitar as a teenager and formed a partnership with producer Lee Hazlewood in the late 1950s, a collaboration that would define his career. In 1958, he released “Rebel Rouser,” a groundbreaking instrumental track featuring his signature low-pitched, reverberating guitar tone. The song became a major hit, reaching the Top 10 on the Billboard charts and establishing Eddy as a star.
His unique use of echo, reverb, and vibrato set him apart from his contemporaries, and his work became a staple of early rock and roll. Eddy’s influence extends far beyond his chart success. Artists ranging from George Harrison to Bruce Springsteen have cited him as an inspiration. His contributions to music earned him induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.
