KWXY Presents the Music of 21 Savage

21 Savage is an awesome performer and brings his brilliant-sharp-tongued lyrics and beat to his own music and his collaborations. 21 Savage is a rapper, songwriter, record producer, philanthropist and entrepreneur who rose to fame after the 2016 release of his debut EP, Savage Mode. The album, a critically acclaimed, self-released collaboration with producer Metro Boomin, was hailed as one of the year’s forty best rap albums by Rolling Stone. It also yielded the singles “X” and “No Heart.” Savage was born Shéyaa Bin Abraham-Joseph in London, UK on October 22, 1992. At age seven, Savage and his mother Heather Camilla Joseph relocated to Atlanta, Georgia following her divorce. As a seventh-grader, the DeKalb County School District banned him for firearms possession, leading to time in a juvenile detention center. He eventually completed the eighth grade before dropping out, joining a gang and becoming a drug dealer. Despite other criminal activities including robbery and car theft, he was only arrested once on a contraband charge. He survived a shooting on his 21st birthday which killed his best friend. Savage began rapping soon after with financial aid from his late friend’s uncle, releasing his debut single “Picky” in 2014. The single later appeared on his debut mixtape, The Slaughter Tape, released the following year. 2015 also saw the release of Free Guwop, a collaborative EP with producer Sonny Digital and Slaughter King, his second mixtape.

Savage’s 2017 debut studio album, Issa Album, went to number two on the Billboard Hot 100. A second 2017 album, Without Warning, reunited Savage with Metro Boomin and rapper Offset. He reunited with Boomin yet again for his 2020 album Savage Mode II. The album became his first number one and its single, “A Lot,” earned a Grammy for Best Rap Song. Since then, 21 Savage has released two EPs, one album and a string of singles. His second studio album in 2018, I Am > I Was, debuted at number one and earned him his first Grammy.

Although 21 Savage has had his share of controversies and legal issues, including a 2014 conviction on felony drug charges and a 2019 arrest on immigration charges for overstaying the visa he obtained as a teen, he continues to assist underprivileged youth in the Atlanta area. His charities include the “Issa Back to School Drive” which provided free haircuts, school supplies, etc. The “21 Savage Bank Account Campaign” was founded to “help kids save money and make money.” In 2020, in association with Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, 21 Savage founded an online literacy program for underserved students, providing free Wi-Fi and tablets.
